SMAC PAC Island Escape

The SMAC PAC annual event will be held onsite at the Grand Wailea Maui during this year’s Annual Convention. The annual FUN-draising auction will be held as a separate virtual event ahead of PAC Night. Interested participants should register for SMAC PAC online, or by submitting a completed registration form, no later than Firday, September 10, 2021.

Employers May Offer Vaccine Incentives

Updated EEOC guidelines note that EEO laws do not preclude employers from offering incentives to employees who voluntarily provide proof of a COVID vaccinations. Vaccination information must be kept confidential and remain in compliance with all federal disability laws and other protections against discrimination.

Core Report Shows Domestic Raw Steel Production Up

Majestic Steel's May 24th Core Report focuses on metal costs and production, showing domestic raw steel production increased last week. The ABI also climbed for the third consecutive month, coming in at 57.9, up from 55.6 in March and up sharply from 29.5 in April 2020.

Make Sure Workers Are Prepared for Summer Heat Stress

SMACNA provides free heat stress tip cards to contractors to help raise awareness of the signs of heat stress. Additionally, OSHA’s heat illness website includes ways to identify the symptoms of heat stress and provides educational and training resources to prevent the onset of heat stress before it occurs. The site also includes a Heat Safety app.

The new CDC guidelines allow for fully vaccinated individuals to no longer wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by law or other rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidelines and policies.

New COVID-19 Workplace Antigen Testing

Antigen tests are an effective tool to help employers prevent the spread COVID-19 in the workplace. When used for screening employees in non-healthcare workplaces, antigen tests can detect current infection before an employee enters the workplace or returns to work.

TAUC Releases 2021 Craft Labor Supply Study

The report shows that the shortage of union craft workers continues. Despite modest gains, the study also reveals that among sheet metal workers, the reported average shortage remained steady at 2.3%. The shortage for sheet metal apprenticeships in 2020 was 40%.

SMOHIT Restarts Job Hazard Screening Program

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of SMOHIT’s 2020 Job Hazard Screening Program. Now, with more than a third of the country fully vaccinated, this important life-saving program has been restarted. Once aimed at asbestos screening only, the program now screens for such diseases as diabetes, hypertension and other non-work related illnesses.
