IRS Publishes Guidelines for Using Energy Efficiency Tax Credits

Notice will detail rules that taxpayers must follow in order to take advantage of 25C Tax Credits for energy efficiency oriented home retrofits.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released additional guidance on how taxpayers can take advantage of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (otherwise known as the 25C tax credit). This document builds on the original fact sheet released by the Department of the Treasury in December 2022.

The Inflation Reduction Act amended the 25C tax credits. The expansions outlined in the law provided taxpayers with financial incentives that can make home energy efficiency retrofits more affordable. The IRA amendments to the section 25C tax cuts expanded the types of expenditures eligible to include home energy audits, which credit 30% of the cost for a home energy audit up to $150 per year.
