Clinton Gowan, Jr. Passes Away at 89

Past SMACNA President leaves behind a legacy of service and generosity to the union sheet metal industry.

Past SMACNA President Clinton Gowan, Jr., 89, passed away at his home in Conroe, Texas, on Friday, July 19, 2024. He was the owner of Gowan, Inc. in Houston, Texas. In May 1959, he graduated with a BS in Psychology from the University of Houston.  He proudly worked alongside his father and brother (Damon) at Gowan, growing the company into one of the largest sheet metal and mechanical contractor companies in Houston, Texas, and continued there until his retirement, December 2015.

His life was filled with great memories of family, friends, professional achievements, and personal accomplishments. Known for his generosity, adventurous spirit, loyalty, determination, and absolute dedication to family; Clinton personified the word blessed. Clinton was a beloved member of the SMACNA family and his contributions to the industry were significant. He was very active nationally and locally, volunteering time to several SMACNA National and local chapter boards, committees, and task forces.

Clinton served as SMACNA National President from 1985 to 1986. and was inducted into the SMACNA College of Fellows in 1986. He served as Trustee for Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Industry Fund of the United States from 2002-2006. Among his many accomplishments, Clinton worked with then Sheet Metal Workers International Association General President Ed Carlough to set up SMOHIT.  

Clinton is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vivian, daughter Cindy Formas (Art), son Clinton Odell Gowan, III “Chip” (Jill), six grandchildren: Arthur "Trey" Formas III (Gabby), Jordan Kellinger (Joe), Jared Gowan (Jenna), Andrew Formas, Jacob Gowan (Camryn), and Joshua Gowan, and three great grandchildren: Henry Joseph Kellinger, Clint Daniel Gowan and Carson Rose Formas, as well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence and Maureen Turner, sister-in-law Carolyn Gowan and many loving nieces and a nephew.

Services will be held at Brookside Funeral home 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX, with visitation on Sunday, August 4th, 5:00-8:00 pm and a Celebration of Life service Monday , August 5th, 10:30 am, with graveside ceremony following.
