Prevention Through Design: A Life Cycle Approach to Safety and Health in the Construction Industry

In Consulting-Specifying Engineer, Mike McCullion, SMACNA’s Director of Market Sectors and Safety, summarizes a technical report on a “life cycle” approach to Prevention through Design (PtD) in construction. McCullion was subgroup chair for the ANSI voluntary consensus standard to address PtD in construction.

McCullion notes that, “prevention through design isn’t just about protecting workers on the new construction project. It also encompasses the safety and health of the people who interact and use the facility once it is built and occupied.”

The technical report, ASSP TR-A10.100-2018 Prevention Through Design – A Life Cycle Approach to Safety and Health in the Construction Industry, is available through the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).
