High School in stainless steel. | Looking as if it could defy gravity, a futuristic tower wrapped in a stainless steel helix is just one of the stunning architectural elements making up the new Los Angeles High School No. 9 for the Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles, Calif.
SMACNA contractor CMF Inc. of Orange, Calif., performed work throughout the new eight-building campus, including the school’s centerpiece – a 140-foot high triangular tower and spiraling helix that overlooks the city of Los Angeles from its northern end.

The gleaming new three-story facility features an office building for staff, two auditorium-style meeting rooms, locker and equipment rooms, and a player and staff dining area. But the building’s most striking feature is its three-story atrium topped by a football-shaped copper roof – fabricated and installed by SMACNA contractor A2MG Inc. of Blue Springs, Mo.

.jpg) | | An overview of the new plaza. | SMACNA contractor, Fabri-Tech of St. Louis, Mo., recently put the finishing touches on a “cloudwall” at the new plaza in the heart of St. Louis’s central business district – the city’s new 30,000-square-foot Old Post Office Plaza. This inviting wide-open space features a cascading three-story waterfall, a 125-foot-long stainless steel wall for outdoor movie screenings, and a zinc-paneled serpentine wall. Formerly a surface parking lot, the new plaza will serve as a gathering place for lunchtime music, evening films, theater, and the arts.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, Essex, Conn. Contractor: C.G. Bostwick Company, Hartford, Conn.
.jpg) | | The Bostwick Co. replaced the slate roof on St. John’s Episcopal Church. | With its rich shipbuilding history, clapboard houses, and historic steam train, the little town of Essex, Conn., situated along the Connecticut River, is a popular destination for summertime visitors. At the height of the summer tourist season, working above sidewalks with strolling tourists, the C.G. Bostwick Company of Hartford, Conn., completed an historic restoration that replaced the entire slate roof and performed sheet metal work including installing copper gutters and decorative molding on St. John’s Episcopal Church.
