Architectural Sheet Metal Inspection Guide

Published: 2004
Description:
FILE SIZE-569KB An invaluable inspection resource for owners of standing seam, batten seam, or Bermuda-type roofs. Presents practical troubleshooting and corrective tips for typical problems of roof panels, gutters, downspouts, fascia, copings, flashing, ridges and hips, valleys, expansion joints, penetrations, fasteners and soldering. Also provides relevant information regarding construction of these architectural elements, the purpose of each, as well as what to look for during periodic inspections. Sealants, moisture transfer methods and air leakage are also covered. Emphasizes the importance of regular and appropriately timed inspections because a small problem discovered early can be fixed at a low cost, preventing minor damage from becoming a substantial problem until the cost of repair and remediation becomes excessive. Contractors will find this book a valuable resource to provide owners or facility managers along with the standard building completion documents.

HVAC Sound and Vibration Manual

Published: 2004
Description:
FILE SIZE: 19.1MB--This first edition of HVAC Sound and Vibration was developed to provide in-depth, HVAC-specific guidance in the art of sound and vibration measurement and mitigation. As building construction has become lighter and tighter, sound and vibration that previously may have gone unnoticed is more often becoming a nuisance. This creates both a problem and an opportunity — a problem because designers and installers must be diligent in using materials and techniques that mitigate the potential for sound and vibration problems and an opportunity for contractors that specialize in resolving occupant complaints related to sound and vibration.

Normal Project Duration NECA #5076-04

Published: 2010
Description:
This new document is an update to an original NECA report, which was published in the early 1980's. New data and information were collected and new methods are presented to provide contractors with additional tools to track productivity using the data in this report as a baseline. Excerpts from the original Normal Project Duration report are used throughout this document. Results shown in this document indicate that electrical contractors are performing work using much shorter durations than 20 years ago. Reductions in project durations were achieved by increasing manpower and using new tools and equipment.

Overtime and Productivity in Electrical Construction NECA #5050-04

Published: 2010
Description:
The difficulties resulting from overtime work might lead many to question the wisdom of using overtime under any circumstances. There do seem to be compelling reasons for adhering closely to the standard work week whenever possible. However, situations do arise in which there is no alternative to working a longer than standard week. In order to assist its membership in managing these situations, NECA has studied the problems associated with overtime work. This publication embodies the significant conclusions produced by the study and where appropriate, offers recommendations for coping with the issues that arise.

Project Peak Workforce Report NECA #5074-04

Published: 2010
Description:
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) published a report, Project Peak Workforce Report, in 1987 that used 120 projects to predict the peak number of workers for jobs based on the documented actual work hours for different types of electrical projects. However, the NECA report has become outdated and no longer represents the current construction scenario. The present publication is an update to the original NECA report, using current project data. The primary purpose of this publication is to assist electrical contractors with estimating the peak number of workers that can be expected on various electrical construction projects, including commercial, industrial, and institutional.

Rectangular Industrial Duct Construction Standards, Metric (SI) Version

Published: 2007
Description:
FILE SIZE:5MB This version of the Rectangular Industrial Duct Construction Standards, 2nd edition (2007) is uniquely identified as the SI version (Metric – le Système International d’Unités) to differentiate it from the version published in 2004 as the I-P version (Inch Pound). This latest publication is based on the exact same theoretical work and scope of the earlier I-P version. What differs greatly between the two publications is that in the SI version the data is expressed in metric units and the ratings are based on the use of materials produced under and to ISO standards, in both strength and physical dimensions (we refer to this methodology as Hard Metric). This characteristic makes the information directly usable in the international market.

SMACNA Bubble DVD Destroys Design Myths

Published: 2009
Description:
The Bubble Video—so called because it uses helium-filled bubbles to visually illustrate airflow through a duct system that is fitted with a clear plastic side—has been revised in modern digital video format. The new video is available on DVD. A number of duct fittings are used to illustrate airflow movement variations through a duct system. The video also references both the SMACNA HVAC Systems Duct Design and HVAC Duct Construction Standard to tie actual airflow performance to the “flat” drawings and commentary within both manuals. The video is intended as an educational tool for designers and engineers to illustrate how good duct design and careful planning to avoid conflicts can be used to improve airflow and reduce one of the largest energy users in commercial-class buildings—HVAC system fan power. The running time for the video is 15 minutes.

SMACNA Reference Manual for Labor Units for Sheet Metal and HVAC

Published: 2010
Description:
This newly updated product provides a source of the labor units data required to fabricate and install HVAC materials and equipment. Duct materials of all common types are covered separately for fabrication and installation rates by lb/hr or hour per piece: fittings and accessories are listed separately, as are reinforcements, tie rods and hangers. Lists the national average amount of man-hours required to fabricate or install a given quantity of each item under typically normal conditions on typically normal projects. An electronic spreadsheet calculates and adjusts the data for specific project types and unique site characteristics that result in projects that are not considered normal. Tables are based on surveys of active sheet metal and air conditioning contractors in the U.S. and Canada, including actual data from numerous projects, along with U.S. government statistics and scholarly reports and journals. The document provides links to a variety of industry reports and studies on site and project conditions.

The purpose of this report is two-fold. First, the report is designed to assist electrical contractors in evaluating the special job conditions found in multi-story building construction that cause an increase in the cost to install the electrical systems. Second, the report offers recommended estimating practices that will insure recovery of these added costs. This report is an update to an existing NECA study and survey from the 1970's. While the results of the original report have essentially been left intact, a new section has been added to further explain the impact of project size on labor productivity
